France 3 is the second largest French public television channel and
part of the France Televisions group, which also includes France 2,
France 4, France 5, and France Ô. It is made up of regional television
stations with regional news programs and about 10 hours of regional entertainment and cultural shows every week. The channel also broadcast national various programs and national news made from Paris. France 3 has less audience constraints when compared to sister channel France 2, with France 2 being the flagship public channel. This allows the channel to concentrate on cultural programming.
France 5 is a public television network in France, part of the France Télévisions group. Principally featuring educational programming, the channel's motto is la chaîne de la connaissance et du savoir (the knowledge and science network). In contrast to the group's main channels, France 2 and France 3, France 5 includes neither entertainment nor dramas in its schedules, but concentrates instead on documentaries and discussion programmes: 3925 hours of documentaries were broadcast in 2003.
France 5 is available round the clock on cable, but over the air its analog programming is replaced by that of Arte during the evening hours (both channels have distinct full-time scheduling on digital TV broadcast).
Arte (Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne ) is a Franco-German TV network. It describes itself as a European culture channel and aims to promote quality programming especially in areas of culture and the arts. Its facilities are located in Issy-les-Moulineaux near Paris, France, Strasbourg, France (headquarters) and Baden-Baden in Germany.
